What AI detectors actually measure
GPTZero, Turnitin, ZeroGPT, Copyleaks and Originality.ai each use their own methods, but they look for the same family of signals. Knowing them is the first step to undetectable AI writing.
- Perplexity. How surprising each word is. AI writers pick the most probable word nearly every time, so their text scores low. People are less predictable.
- Burstiness. How much sentence length and structure vary. AI text tends to be uniform. Human text swings between short and long.
- Repetitive phrasing. The same connectors and sentence frames used over and over.
- Stock vocabulary. Words and phrases that appear far more in AI output than in human writing: delve, crucial, tapestry, in today's fast-paced world, it is worth noting.
- Structure. Topic sentence, three points, summary sentence, repeated for every paragraph.
A detector scores these across the whole text and sometimes sentence by sentence. So a single obvious phrase rarely triggers a flag, but a page full of even rhythm and predictable words almost always does.
Five manual techniques that work
If you want to edit by hand, these changes have the biggest effect on a detection score:
- Break the rhythm. Follow a long sentence with a very short one. Then combine two medium sentences into one longer one with a clause in the middle.
- Delete the connectors. Remove most instances of Moreover, Furthermore, Additionally and In conclusion. Good paragraphs usually connect without them.
- Replace generic examples with specific ones. A named place, a real number, something you saw. AI writers default to abstractions.
- Cut the recap. Delete summary sentences at the end of paragraphs and the conclusion that restates the introduction.
- Use plainer words. Swap utilize for use, pivotal for important or just drop it. Over-polished vocabulary is a tell.
These work, but they take time, roughly 15 to 30 minutes per page to do properly. Synonym swapping on its own does not work: it changes the words but leaves perplexity and burstiness almost the same.
The faster way: humanize it
The Humanizer applies those sentence-level changes for you in seconds, while keeping your meaning, facts, arguments and citations. Length stays roughly the same and the tone follows the purpose you pick.
- Paste your text into the box at the top of the page. It works on English text from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and other AI writers.
- Choose a purpose: Essay, Email, Blog/Article or General.
- Choose Enhanced mode if the text will face a strict detector. Choose Standard for a lighter, natural rewrite.
- Click Humanize.
- Click Check AI score to see the original and the result scored side by side.
If the text came straight out of a chat window, clean it first with the free AI text cleaner. Hidden zero-width characters, markdown asterisks and # headings are easy to miss and look odd once pasted into a document. For ChatGPT-specific habits, see how to humanize ChatGPT text.
Manual editing vs the humanizer
- Time. Manual: 15 to 30 minutes per page. Humanizer: a few seconds, plus a quick read-through.
- Consistency. Manual edits tend to fade toward the end of a long document as you tire. The humanizer treats every paragraph the same way.
- Checking. Manually, you paste into a separate detector and guess. With the humanizer, the before and after scores sit side by side.
- Your voice. Manual editing wins here. Use the tool for the heavy rewriting, then add your own details by hand.
In practice the best results come from combining the two. Let the humanizer do the first full pass, then spend five minutes adding the specifics that make the piece yours.
Undetectable AI for different kinds of writing
What counts as natural depends on the reader. A blog post can open with a question and use short, punchy paragraphs. An email should get to the point in the first line. An essay needs a formal register and careful hedging. That is why the purpose setting matters: pick Blog/Article, Email or Essay and the rewrite follows the conventions of that format instead of producing one generic human tone for everything.
Before you use the text
No rewrite replaces a final read. Read the result once, check facts and names, and add at least one detail from your own experience. Run it through the free AI detector for a second look if the stakes are high. For academic work specifically, see the Turnitin guide and GPTZero guide, and remember you are responsible for following the rules your school sets on AI.
Free use covers 200 words per run and 5 runs a day with no sign-up. For longer documents, Basic and Pro allow 1,000 and 3,000 words per run. Compare plans on the pricing page.
